I honestly didn't know the strap on went back this far... in history.
Naturally with this kind of thing it's difficult to pin point it's exact roots (serrious pun intended).
Obviously it has been included in the Karma Sutra, but where else does one look to find the origins of strap on penetration?
Leather was used to make a strap for the dildos of Ancient Greece, which where made of stone of padded leather, and olive oil was in the case of anal penetration (OG DIY).
There were double ended dildos recorded in Zanzibar in 1899 (or for you Star Wars fans, as I like to call them: Sith lightsaber)
There a paintings from 19th Century China showing dildo strapped to a woman's shoe, providing us with the information that imaginative, or one might even say artistic, application of strap-ons was prospective.
Regardless, this little androgynous pal has been around for quite some time.
